Orange County CoolSculpting FAQ

Q: What is CoolSculpting ®?

CoolSculpting ® is a machine, created by a company called Zeltiq, that freezes fat to a level that damages fat cells, but leaves all other cells (such as skin cells and nerve cells) completely intact. It uses a medical discovery that has been called “cryolipolysis,” which found that fat cells freeze and die before any other cells in the body. CoolSculpting ® is the technology used to contour the body using this interesting medical phenomenon.

Q: Why Do They Call it “Fat Freeze?”

When you undergo CoolSculpting ®, a vacuum pulls the fat cells to the surface, and then the machine cools them to a temperature that freezes them. It is cold enough to freeze and crystalize fat cells, but warm enough that it won’t cause frostbite or damage your skin and tissues.

Q: What is DualSculpting?

DualSculpting is a term that refers to using two CoolSculpting ® machines in the same session, to get twice the benefits in half the time. The procedures are essentially identical, but DualSculpting is much more efficient and makes contouring the whole body much easier.

Q: What is Involved Before I Can Get CoolSculpting ® Completed?

One of the best parts about CoolSculpting ® and DualSculpting is that there is little to no medical clearance necessary. You don’t have to see your primary care physician first, or, in most cases, get any type of medical health clearance. You simply need to have a consultation with Orange County CoolSculpting ® to make sure you’re a good candidate. In some cases, we may even be able to see you that day.

Q: Does it Hurt?

The short answer is no. The long answer is that some people do experience some discomfort in the beginning, but it is usually described as mild and lasts only a few minutes. Some claim it feels like putting ice down their shirt. Everyone’s individual experience is different, but few to no patients ever take any type of painkiller before or after the treatment, and after a few minutes the skin becomes numb and you should not feel any pain. If you’re concerned, call Orange County CoolSculpting ® at 949-337-1431 and we’ll talk to you about the potential discomforts involved.

Q: How Long Will CoolSculpting ® Take?

Individual time varies. However, most areas take one hour of CoolSculpting ® treatment. With DualSculpting, it is possible to do two areas in one hour. If you are treating more than one area, then the treatment can take longer depending on the number of areas being treated.

Q: Am I Asleep During that Time?

There is no anesthesia involved or necessary, since the procedure is non-surgical. In fact, the only reason patients are ever asleep during the procedure is because it is so pain free they decide to take a nap. Most patients tend to read books or play on their phones or watch a movie in our CoolSculpting ® room while the procedure takes place. It is recommended you bring something to do to pass the time.

Q: Are There Any Side Effects or Dangers?

Localized redness, numbness, and bruising can occur after the procedure is completed. However, consistent studies have shown that there are no permanent side effects or dangers. CoolSculpting ® is considered a completely safe activity.

Q: What is the Recovery Time?

Recovery time, with the exception of bruising or nerve tingling, is immediate. Since there are no cuts, there is nothing that needs to heal. You can resume normal activities often immediately after the procedure is over. Some people go back to work afterwards.

Q: What Results Can I Expect?

At Orange County CoolSculpting ®, we do our best to get you the maximum amount of fat loss. Total fat loss varies between 30 and 40% depending on how much fat crystalizes, how much fat you had, and where the fat is located. Keep in mind, however, that once fat crystallizes it takes as long as 3 months to see results, since your body has to continue to remove the cells over time. Thus results may not be apparent right away.
