Upper Back Fat– Many people have little areas of their body that cause them distress. But those areas are not always in places that are easy to see. That is often the case with upper back fat, sometimes referred to as “bra fat.” On women, these are pockets of stubborn subcutaneous fat that seem to build up around the upper back and hang downwards (usually over bras, but the fat is often present even without a bra present). Many women find this fat to be stressful, particularly at the beach or when changing, and in some cases the fat itself can cause physical discomfort that hurts your quality of life. What Causes Back Fat?
As with most areas of stubborn body fat, the causes can vary depending on the individual. Genetics and diet and exercise certainly play a significant role. But for many, there are other factors at play as well, including:
- Wearing a Bra – While many people belief that bras make upper back fat more visible, the truth is that bras themselves can be a contributing factor. Bras that are too tight, worn incorrectly, put on the body incorrectly, or worn too often can put pressure on the subcutaneous fat and skin beneath the bra, pushing it over the bra and causing weight gain to occur more visibly around the upper back.
- Age – The other culprit may simply be age. As you age, the skin on the upper back grows weaker and loses its elasticity. Depending on the individual, the upper back may be the location that skin gets weak, thus causing fat to accumulate. Bras and tight clothing may also play a role, though this area has been known to affect men as well.
All of these potential factors mean that upper back fat/bra fat may not have a clear cause, but there is no denying that when it occurs it can be stressful, especially if it is combined with physical discomforts. Does CoolSculpting ® Yield the Same Results as Liposuction?
